The Automatons can also save up industry like dust, however I have yet to play them and can't explain this yet. Food and industry apply within-system only, science and dust apply empire-wide, and dust can be saved up and spent later. There are 4 "resources" your civilization produces, called FIDS: Food, Industry, Dust, and Science.
